Cholera Cases Surge in Several States

A meeting of the Federal Emergency Operations Center revealed a surge in cholera cases across several states, reaching 2,729 cases within a week, including 172 deaths. It noted that 90% of the new cases are in Khartoum State, particularly in Karari, Omdurman, and Umbadda, followed by North Kordofan, Sennar, Gezira, White Nile, and River Nile states.

The meeting also reported that the cumulative number of dengue fever cases has reached 12,886, including 20 deaths. Measles has been recorded cumulatively in six states with 54 cases, including two deaths. Meningitis was reported in six states with 134 cases and 12 deaths, with 73.9% of the cases in Gezira State. Furthermore, 91% of the Hepatitis E cases were reported in Kassala State.

The meeting reviewed a report from the National Public Health Laboratory, in addition to reports from relevant committees, activities of the World Health Organization, and the Kuwaiti Patient Aid Fund.

It also discussed the health situation in Khartoum State, where a federal team led by the Acting Director of the General Department of Health Emergencies and Epidemic Control visited. The team held meetings with ministries and relevant bodies, dividing work into several sectors and committees to control the outbreak in the state, assess supply levels, monitor the efforts of operating organizations, and begin cholera vaccination campaigns. The campaign started in the Al-Baja Abdel Hadi area in Jebel Awlia locality, with plans to expand to other localities in the next phase.

The meeting called for intensified efforts, particularly in the area of environmental health in Khartoum State, given the current challenges.
