Hundreds of Millions in Support for Al-Fashir Communal Kitchens

The government of North Darfur State has announced an additional SDG 300 million in support for the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development to aid communal kitchens (“takayas”) in the city of Al-Fashir. This assistance aims to provide humanitarian relief and ease the suffering of families in city neighborhoods and IDP shelter centers.

Acting Governor of North Darfur, Al-Hafiz Bakhit Mohamed, stated that the additional support for the takayas is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to confront the dire living conditions faced by Al-Fashir’s residents due to the unjust siege imposed on the city. He instructed the Ministry to immediately distribute the funds to affected families in neighborhoods and displacement centers starting Wednesday to help them acquire essential foodstuffs.

According to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the governor stressed that the dire humanitarian and economic conditions caused by the siege imposed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) require urgent local and international action. Despite the limited capabilities of the state government, he affirmed that all resources would be mobilized to confront the crisis and provide other necessary services.

He praised the significant role played by communal kitchens and water stations in supporting families and IDPs, describing them as one of the most effective relief solutions. He reaffirmed his support for such vital initiatives and stated that the health and water sectors are top priorities at this stage. The state government will continue to support these two sectors to ensure they fulfill their critical responsibilities to the community.

The governor also called on international humanitarian organizations to fulfill their duty in delivering urgent aid to civilians and urged the international community to pressure the militia to comply with UN and Security Council resolutions demanding the lifting of the siege on Al-Fashir to allow humanitarian access.

He expressed deep appreciation for the steadfastness of Al-Fashir’s citizens in the face of adversity, lauding their resilience and patriotic commitment to their city, and announced that a decisive victory is near.

It is worth noting that the state government had previously provided SDG 350 million in support for the humanitarian aid program implemented by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development over the past two weeks. This program aimed to alleviate human suffering and targeted 2,247 families in 43 neighborhoods and 47 IDP shelter centers across Al-Fashir.
