UN: What’s Happening in Sudan is Not Just a Humanitarian Crisis — It’s a “Crisis of Humanity”

“What is happening in Sudan is not only a humanitarian crisis. It is a crisis of humanity itself,” said Mona Rishmawi, spokesperson for the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, in a statement regarding the war that has raged in the country for over two years.

The mission condemned the widespread use of sexual violence, the deaths of children due to hunger, and the obstruction of humanitarian aid. “While bombs and bullets dominate the headlines in Sudan, a quieter — yet perhaps more deadly — war is being waged on the bodies of women, girls, and marginalized communities,” Rishmawi added.

The war in Sudan began in mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).

The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of 14.3 million people — the largest forced displacement in the world, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Fact-Finding Mission also reported increased use of heavy weaponry by both sides in targeting civilian areas.

Mohamed Chande Othman, head of the mission, stated, “Civilians continue to bear the brunt,” describing a conflict that is becoming increasingly “complex and brutal.”

Rishmawi also noted that “hunger is being used as a weapon. Humanitarian aid is not only being denied entry but is being deliberately manipulated,” according to reports received.
