The Italian Institute for International Affairs has warned of serious security repercussions for Libya following the takeover of the border triangle by the rebel militia, describing the area as a hub for fuel and arms smuggling as well as illegal migration.
In its analysis, the Italian Institute of International Relations highlighted the impact of the expansion of what it described as the Rapid Support “militias” in Sudan on the situation in southern Libya. It pointed out the historical instability of this border region and its lack of full governmental control, noting its long-standing involvement in illicit activities and its status as one of the major hotspots of instability in the eastern Sahel region.
According to the institute, “The takeover of this geographical area by an armed non-state actor could significantly expand the threats posed to neighboring countries and the broader Mediterranean region.”
Detailing the risks, the institute explained that the border triangle is connected to entrenched smuggling networks involving fuel, light weapons, and goods—most notably, human trafficking.
The Italian institute warned that if the Rapid Support Forces manage to establish effective control over these routes, it would not put an end to criminal activities; rather, it would transform them into a militarized and informally organized system.
