Libyan Authorities Deport Dozens of Sudanese Refugees from Kufra

On Sunday, Libya’s Anti-Illegal Migration Authority announced the deportation of 172 Sudanese refugees from the city of Kufra to the border triangle area.

According to a statement cited by “Darfur24,” the deportation involved Sudanese nationals, some of whom had security restrictions issued against them, while others were diagnosed with serious and contagious diseases.

The authority did not provide further details regarding the operation or the identities of those deported.

Several Sudanese residents in Libya told “Darfur24” that among those deported were refugees registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), noting that they had been detained for over six months in various Libyan detention centers.

Suleiman Abdullah, a member of the Sudanese community in Libya, stated that most of those deported had been transferred from the Qanfouda detention center in Benghazi and from Kufra following a large-scale arrest campaign targeting foreigners during the recent Eid al-Adha holiday.

Meanwhile, Khaled A., another member of the Sudanese community, expressed concern over the timing of the deportations, warning that returning them to Sudan—given the recent military escalation in the border triangle between Libya, Sudan, and Egypt—could pose a direct threat to their lives.

He explained that eyewitnesses confirmed the deterioration of humanitarian conditions in the triangle area amid ongoing military operations, which further increases the suffering of the deportees and exposes them to greater risks.
