Armed Sudanese men from Um Dafuq locality in South Darfur State have crossed into the Central African Republic, in what is believed to be a move to attack the town of Birao, home to the Kara tribe, near the Sudanese border.
Sources told Darfur24 that “Sudanese gunmen wearing military uniforms and riding around 440 motorcycles crossed the border three days ago.”
The sources speculated that the armed group is planning to attack the Kara tribe in Birao, after the tribe rejected mediation efforts by local community leaders in Um Dafuq.
The gunmen are reportedly stationed in the eastern and northern outskirts, just tens of kilometers from Birao.
A local official in Um Dafuq told Darfur24 that the current mobilization is a “popular tribal mobilization”, mostly consisting of residents from Um Dafuq, gathered to avenge the killing of three herders in Birao earlier this week by members of the Kara tribe.
He added that local community leaders are working to return the armed group back into Sudan.
