Disagreements Stall ‘Quad’ Meetings in Washington

A Western diplomat told Sudan Tribune that disagreements among the countries participating in the “Quad” meetings in Washington have delayed progress, particularly over the issue of Sudanese party representation.

Last Tuesday, U.S. Presidential Advisor for African Affairs, Masad Boulos, announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio intends to hold an imminent meeting in Washington on the war in Sudan, involving the foreign ministers of the four-member “Quad” group: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and the United States.

In statements to Al-Sharq TV, Boulos said that around three weeks ago, ambassadors from the Quad countries were invited to meet with Rubio to discuss the Sudanese crisis.

The diplomat, who requested anonymity, revealed that Egypt’s insistence on including representatives of the Sudanese army caused a delay in holding the meeting. In contrast, Washington opposes the participation of military leaders, particularly after it imposed sanctions on several of them.

The source added that the U.S. administration proposed inviting leaders from the civilian government that was overthrown in the October 2021 coup, a suggestion that was rejected by Cairo.
