Prime Minister Dr. Kamal Idris emphasized the importance of adhering to safety measures concerning nuclear and radiation risks, especially in the Radiation Oncology Hospital (Al-Zarra Hospital) in Khartoum and similar facilities affected by attacks from the rebel militia. He also recommended strict compliance with international agreements and protocols in this field.
The Prime Minister met at his office in Port Sudan with a delegation from the National Regulatory Authority for Nuclear and Radiological Safety, headed by Mujahid Mahmoud Hamid, Secretary of Nuclear Security and Safeguards.
The delegation briefed the Prime Minister on the authority’s role in protecting humans, animals, and the environment from radiation hazards, particularly during the RSF’s attacks on Khartoum State, which damaged medical, industrial, and research facilities.
A member of the delegation said in a press statement: “We informed him about the relevant international agreements on the peaceful use of radioactive and nuclear materials.” He noted that the Prime Minister affirmed the necessity of proceeding with the implementation of these international agreements and treaties.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of oversight and regulation in handling radiation, in preparation for restarting operations in some health and therapeutic institutions using radioactive materials and radiation devices, particularly Al-Zarra Hospital in Khartoum, Madani, and Shendi. He confirmed that the regulatory authority will continue to implement his recommendations.
