Prime Minister Calls on AU to Lift Sudan’s Suspension

Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris called on the African Union to treat the lifting of Sudan’s suspension as an “acquired right,” stressing the need for impartiality and professionalism, free from external interference. He emphasized that Sudan has fulfilled all requirements for the restoration of its membership, including the appointment of a civilian prime minister and the formation of the “Hope Government” comprising independent national technocrats.

Dr. Idris argued that the African Union stands to benefit the most from Sudan’s return as an active member, given Sudan’s longstanding contributions to African initiatives predating the AU’s establishment.

During a meeting at his office in Port Sudan with Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Head of the AU Liaison Office in Sudan, the Prime Minister reiterated the Hope Government’s full readiness to cooperate with the African Union on all issues concerning the continent.

He also highlighted Sudan’s historic roles within the African framework, underscoring the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty, the state’s authority, and the dignity of the Sudanese people—stating this is a “red line” in all dealings.

Dr. Idris stressed the importance of a Sudanese-led dialogue held within Sudan, announcing the Hope Government’s commitment to creating the conditions necessary for a successful national dialogue.

For his part, Ambassador Belaiche emphasized the importance of restoring Sudan’s AU membership and confirmed the Union’s support for Sudan’s legitimate institutions. He also pointed to the AU’s interest in post-war reconstruction programs and voluntary return for displaced persons and refugees.

He revealed that the AU Peace and Security Council is scheduled to convene on August 4 to discuss the Sudan file.
