Secret Militia Camp Uncovered in Libya’s Desert

The Conflict Information Resilience (CIR) center, a UK-based nonprofit specializing in open-source digital intelligence, has revealed the existence of a secret base for Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in the Libyan desert near the city of Kufra.

The investigation, titled “How We Discovered a Rapid Support Forces Camp in the Libyan Desert,” confirms that this site is used as a rear base to support military operations in Sudan’s Darfur region.

The center’s findings are based on satellite imagery, online videos, and photographs, which show convoys of heavily armed Toyota Land Cruisers in the area. Evidence indicates that these vehicles, first spotted at the Libyan camp, were later seen at the Zamzam IDP camp in Darfur, where the RSF carried out a deadly attack in April. The assault resulted in at least 100 fatalities, including over 20 children and nine aid workers, according to Clementine Nkweta Salami, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan.

The investigation further points to a direct link between the Libyan camp and a senior RSF commander, General Hamdan Al-Kujali, the security chief for the militia’s deputy leader, Abdel Rahim Dagalo. The CIR documented Kujali’s presence in a vehicle at the Zamzam camp before he was seriously injured near Al-Fashir in April and transferred to a Turkish hospital in Nyala for treatment.

The center confirmed that the Zamzam camp currently serves as a base for Colombian mercenaries and other foreign fighters backing the RSF’s attacks on Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, which has been under siege by government forces for 18 months. Videos show camouflaged uniforms and RSF-specific shoulder insignia, alongside vehicles with paint-sprayed numbers used to track movements via satellite.

The CIR report explains that the RSF transports military equipment through Libya, supported by supply routes extending from Abu Dhabi through Chad and Libya—corroborating UN expert reports citing arms embargo violations in 2024.
