A local official at the “Brau” refugee camp for Sudanese in the Central African Republic revealed on Monday that two young girls were brutally raped by unknown assailants while collecting firewood outside the camp on Saturday.
The incident comes weeks after refugees in Brau called on local authorities and international organizations for protection, following three previous incidents, including a murder within the camp, raising widespread concern among residents.
The official, who requested anonymity, told Darfur24 that the girls were subjected to a savage attack by unidentified youths. The girls’ family has filed a criminal complaint, and the victims were taken to a hospital, where medical examinations confirmed genital injuries consistent with rape.
The incident has sparked outrage and fear among the refugees, as local security authorities in the Central African Republic have yet to apprehend the perpetrators.
Ahmad Adam Al-Sheikh, head of the Brau camp, told Darfur24 that there is an urgent need to overhaul the security team responsible for protecting the camp. He described the situation as unsafe and urged refugees to safeguard families, especially children and women.
