Surge in Sugar Prices, Former Industrial Chamber Official Explains

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah

Sugar prices have recorded a sharp increase, with a 50-kg sack of Kenana sugar reaching 160,000 Sudanese pounds across most states, while the same size of imported sugar sold for 152,000 pounds.

Traders attributed the hike to the rising dollar exchange rate, as well as growing demand during the Prophet’s Birthday celebrations, when confectionery production peaks.

Former Secretary-General of the Federation of Industrial Chambers, Abdulrahman Abbas, told Al-Ahdath that the surge was driven by higher production costs amid the ongoing war. However, he also accused “crisis traders” of speculating in the commodity, stressing that current prices remain “quite profitable” compared to prevailing economic conditions.

Earlier, Minister of Industry and Trade Mahasin Ali Yaqoub confirmed that the war has had a devastating impact on the sugar sector, damaging production infrastructure and disrupting supply chains, which in turn has severely undermined factories’ operational capacity.
