AU and IGAD: We Reject Any Foreign Military Intervention in Sudan’s War

The African Union Commission and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) welcomed the joint statement issued by the Foreign Ministers of the International Quartet (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the United States) on the conflict in Sudan, describing it as a significant step toward peace.

In their joint communiqué, the AU and IGAD affirmed that the Quartet’s position fully aligns with the African roadmap and IGAD’s plans to end the war in Sudan, stressing that there is no military solution to the crisis and that the only way forward is through an inclusive, civilian-led political process.

The two organizations welcomed calls for immediate humanitarian access, protection of civilians, and a three-month humanitarian truce to be monitored through the Jeddah process as a first step toward a permanent ceasefire. They also urged the launch of a civilian-led transition within nine months, ensuring inclusivity, legitimacy, and accountability, while firmly rejecting any form of foreign military intervention or extremist influence.

The statement further announced that the AU and IGAD, in coordination with the Arab League, the United Nations, and the European Union, will convene a new round of consultations with Sudanese civilian forces in October to strengthen unity and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive Sudanese-owned dialogue leading to a civilian constitutional transition.

The AU and IGAD reaffirmed their commitment to work with the Quartet, the Sudanese people, and regional and international partners to end the war, safeguard Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, and return the country to a civilian-led constitutional transition.
