Sudan Appeals to International Community for Reconstruction Support

Sudan renewed its appeal to the international community and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to support efforts to rebuild institutions related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The country expressed its interest in enhancing cooperation and leveraging its agricultural potential to achieve the objectives of the “Corn for Food” initiative launched by the IAEA and FAO in October 2023.

Professor Ahmed Madawi Musa, Sudan’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, presented a statement during the 69th General Conference of the IAEA, which began on Tuesday in Vienna.

The minister called on the agency to send a technical team to assess the extent of the damage to all institutions linked to peaceful nuclear uses, and thanked the agency for its ongoing support, including sending missions to evaluate radiotherapy centers in Khartoum, Wad Medani, and Shendi under the “Rays of Hope for Cancer Treatment” initiative, and assisting Sudan in combating marine plastic pollution.

Sudan reiterated its commitment to all measures and obligations arising from international treaties and conventions related to nuclear security and the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards system.

The Sudanese delegation to the General Conference included representatives from the National Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority, the Sudan Atomic Energy Corporation, and Sudan’s permanent mission to the UN and international organizations in Vienna. The delegation will meet the IAEA Director General and deputies to discuss technical cooperation, nuclear science and applications, and nuclear security matters, in addition to organizing an exhibition showcasing the agency’s support and the destruction inflicted on Sudan’s national institutions related to peaceful nuclear use.
