The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, said Tuesday that efforts are underway to influence the positions of countries playing a role in the Sudanese crisis.
Speaking after a meeting with the Democratic Bloc, Lamamra stated: “We are working to impact the international positions that have a role in the ordeal of the Sudanese people and the abnormal conditions imposed on them in terms of security and stability.”
He explained that discussions with the Democratic Bloc focused on UN efforts to protect civilians and accelerate attempts to resolve the crisis in response to the aspirations of Sudanese people.
“We must intensify our efforts so that the third year of war does not become normalized. We need a qualitative shift on the ground to end the suffering of the Sudanese people,” Lamamra added.
He also noted that the UN is part of ongoing international mobilization to improve conditions in El Fasher.
For his part, Sudan Liberation Movement leader and Democratic Bloc figure Minni Minnawi said the meeting with Lamamra was part of the envoy’s tour of Sudan to discuss UN initiatives for achieving peace and improving humanitarian conditions.
Minnawi added that discussions focused on the situation in besieged cities, especially El Fasher, as well as Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan, and Babanusa in West Kordofan.
He noted that the envoy stressed the urgent need to save El Fasher and expressed his commitment to Sudan’s unity and sovereignty.
