Energy Minister: Militias Looted 60,000 Transformers

Sudanese Energy Minister, Eng. Advisor Al-Mutassim Ibrahim, revealed that Khartoum State lost more than 14,000 electricity distribution transformers due to looting and attacks by the Rapid Support Forces militia. He added that the total number of transformers lost nationwide during the conflict exceeds 60,000.

The minister urged Egypt’s El Sewedy Group to expedite the resumption of its transformer manufacturing operations in Sudan.

During a meeting in Cairo with El Sewedy Group Chairman Ahmed El Sewedy and Board Chairman Eng. Walid El-Deeb, the minister called for greater efforts to meet Sudan’s urgent transformer needs. He underlined the strength and historical depth of Sudanese-Egyptian relations, pointing to joint ventures, including El Sewedy’s investments in Sudan, which he described as crucial amid widespread destruction and theft of infrastructure. He emphasized that reconstruction remains the ministry’s top priority.

Ahmed El Sewedy confirmed the group’s readiness to cooperate with Sudan in providing the necessary transformers to restore Khartoum State, enabling citizens to return to their homes and workplaces. Walid El-Deeb added that the company has already begun rehabilitating its Sudan factory, expecting operations to resume soon, with a focus on repairing and producing distribution transformers.

This visit comes within the ministry’s broader efforts to reestablish local transformer production in Sudan. El Sewedy owns the country’s largest transformer plant, operating in partnership with the Sudanese Electricity Company.
