Activists reported on Sunday that at least 73 children and over 20 elderly individuals fleeing the Abushouk camp in North Darfur have died due to food scarcity and deteriorating humanitarian conditions in El Fasher.
In late August, the RSF militia stormed the camp, committing a massacre that killed around 40 displaced persons, abducting others, and destroying 98% of water sources, according to activists.
The Abushouk Emergency Room stated that “more than 73 children under five and 22 elderly people have died in the past 40 days due to hunger and disease among the camp’s displaced population.”
Those forced to leave the camp face “extremely harsh” conditions with little access to food or medicine, worsening malnutrition among children and the elderly. Free kitchens have ceased operations due to funding shortages, with the cost of a single meal for 20 families exceeding 9 million Sudanese pounds.
The statement warned of a looming health disaster due to unburied bodies near displaced populations, citing security constraints. It called on international and humanitarian organizations to ensure a safe corridor for civilians to exit conflict zones.
