Salva Kiir Implements Major Changes in Military and Ministerial Leadership

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit has implemented wide-ranging changes in military and ministerial leadership within his government.

The reshuffle comes amid domestic challenges, including the trial of First Vice President Riek Machar on charges of undermining the constitutional order and attacking government sites.

The changes included reappointing General Paul Nang Majok as head of the Defense Forces, replacing Dau Aturjong Nyuel, who was named technical advisor at the Ministry of Defense. Dr. Lam Akol, leader of the National Democratic Movement, was removed as Minister of Transport and replaced by Rizq Zakaria.

Additionally, Denay Jok Shagour was transferred to the Ministry of Wildlife and Tourism, and Binq Gideon Mapour was relieved from the Ministry of East African Affairs, replaced by General Fieng Ding Kwal.

Senior administrative positions were also reshuffled, including the Civil Aviation Authority and the Ministry of Labor, in a move aimed at restructuring the administrative apparatus to enhance efficiency.

The return of General Paul Nang Majok as head of the Defense Forces signals Kiir’s intent to strengthen security amid ongoing instability. The dismissal of prominent politician Lam Akol indicates a shift from traditional political power to emerging security leadership, aimed at stabilizing the fragile security situation. Observers believe these changes reflect Kiir’s strategy to consolidate power and address escalating political and security challenges in South Sudan.
