Sudanese Delegate in Geneva Denounces International Silence on Militia Atrocities

Sudan’s permanent representative in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamed, addressed a high-level joint briefing organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, attended by the UN Refugee Agency, the International Organization for Migration, and Médecins Sans Frontières.

The ambassador reviewed the humanitarian and health situation in Sudan, focusing on conditions in El Fasher, Deleng, and Kadugli. He condemned the international community’s silence in the face of militia atrocities, including the use of sieges and starvation as weapons to kill or displace civilians, in blatant defiance of international appeals, including UN Security Council Resolution 2736.

He highlighted voluntary returns of displaced persons and refugees, citing a recent IOM report documenting over two million returns in the past month to areas under government control, reflecting public trust in the government and Sudanese Armed Forces. He noted that none of the returnees went to areas controlled by rebel militias.

The ambassador also reviewed ongoing government efforts to provide immediate needs for returnees, including essential services, and urged humanitarian organizations to implement urgent projects to support these efforts. He emphasized the government’s priority of restoring essential services and rehabilitating facilities destroyed by the militias.

A significant part of his statement focused on the health situation, noting the systematic targeting and destruction of the health system and calling on specialized organizations to support the Federal Ministry of Health’s efforts to combat dengue outbreaks in some states.

Ahead of the session, Sudan’s mission in Geneva had submitted urgent lists of needs to combat dengue and seasonal emergencies to relevant organization heads.

In conclusion, the permanent representative reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expedite procedures for international humanitarian organizations and facilitate their operations.
