Sudan’s Delegate in Geneva Highlights Janjaweed Militia Crimes Before UN Conference

Sudan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, delivered Sudan’s statement before the 16th Ministerial Conference of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

In his address, the ambassador outlined the scale of the systematic targeting and destruction carried out by the rebel militia against the country’s infrastructure and economy, including major production and industrial projects, as well as key ministries, institutions, and agencies linked to financial and banking systems.

He added that prior to the outbreak of the militia’s insurgency, Sudan had made significant progress toward joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, all preparatory work and arrangements were temporarily halted due to the rebellion.

Ambassador Hamid emphasized Sudan’s vast and diverse natural resources—rarely found elsewhere—including gold, oil, and extensive agricultural wealth, highlighting the country’s major investment potential, particularly in agriculture and production, at a time when the world faces growing food and water crises.

He also referred to Sudan’s forest resources, noting that, in coordination with UNCTAD, the country had made preparations to host a regional conference on gum arabic in Khartoum. These plans were suspended following the outbreak of the militia’s rebellion.

Concluding his statement, the ambassador underscored the importance of building the capacities of least developed countries to integrate into the global economy. He pointed to the challenges facing developing nations, especially the digital divide, in an era when trade and supply chains increasingly rely on digital technologies, including artificial intelligence. He stressed the need to intensify efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain distant for many developing countries, urging the international community to ensure that “no one is left behind.”
