
Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, highlighted Germany’s key role within the European Union and its longstanding support for Sudan during a meeting with Serap Gwar, Germany’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, on Sunday.
During the meeting, Burhan updated the visiting official on the situation in Sudan amid violations by the Al-Daklo militia against the state, its institutions, and citizens. He stressed the importance of Germany’s positive engagement to persuade the militia and its supporters to end hostilities and alleviate Sudanese suffering.
The minister noted that she had visited Chad, meeting government officials and Sudanese refugees along the border, witnessing the hardships they face. She emphasized the Sudanese people’s desire for peace, the return of children to schools, and millions of refugees to their homes, stating, “This war must stop immediately.”
She described the situation in Al-Fashir as dire, noting that the RSF militia had besieged the city for over 500 days, attacking facilities, places of worship, and shelters. She condemned sexual and gender-based violence used as a weapon of war by the RSF and called for an immediate end to the siege, urging respect for international humanitarian law.
The minister urged all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and thanked Burhan for facilitating humanitarian aid delivery, highlighting improvements in aid access. She stressed the importance of UN organizations being present throughout Sudan and reaffirmed Germany’s support for efforts to establish peace and a comprehensive civilian-led transition.
