Sudan Urges African Union to Classify RSF as a Terrorist Organization

Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador Al-Zain Al-Hussein, said he held “constructive discussions” with Adama Dieng, the AU Envoy for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities, focusing on the grave developments in Sudan and the widespread violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilians.

In a statement posted on X, Ambassador Al-Hussein said Sudan had called on the African Union to take decisive measures to deter the RSF and its backers — including designating it as a terrorist organization — in light of documented atrocities, mass killings, and ethnic cleansing in Darfur and other regions.

The move comes amid ongoing international efforts to halt violations in Sudan and growing calls to refer RSF leaders to the International Criminal Court. These developments reflect mounting concerns over the widening scope of crimes against civilians and the continued failure of humanitarian operations to reach those in need.

Observers view Sudan’s latest diplomatic push as part of a broader strategy to mobilize a firm regional and international stance against the paramilitary group, following similar appeals at the United Nations and in several Western capitals to criminalize external financial and military support to the RSF.
