The UNICEF envoy to Sudan, Sheldon Yett, has compared the current situation in Sudan to the Rwandan genocide of the 1990s.
Speaking to Der Spiegel magazine, Yett said: “Much of what is happening now in parts of Sudan reminds me of that time. Reports of rampages and jubilation over killings… there is targeted violence against different ethnic groups.”
Yett, who personally witnessed the Rwandan genocide, said: “The stories from survivors are shocking—killings, extortion, rape. Some pay enormous sums to flee. There’s a complete collapse of order. Sudan has become a testing ground for modern warfare.”
He added that about 260,000 people remain trapped in El-Fasher, unable to escape: “They are eating grass and animal feed. Many are dying from hunger or lack of medicine.”
