European Union Plans Sanctions on Abdelrahim Dagalo

According to Reuters, citing European diplomatic sources, the European Union (EU) is preparing to impose a new package of sanctions targeting Abdelrahim Dagalo, deputy commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan. The move reflects growing international concern over escalating violations in the country, particularly following events in Al-Fashir, which included reports of mass killings and attacks on civilians.
The sanctions are expected to include travel bans, asset freezes, and restrictions on financial dealings within the EU, as part of the bloc’s policy of pressuring parties accused of serious human rights violations.
This development comes amid increasing international calls for accountability of RSF leaders, following documented allegations by the United Nations and human rights organizations of systematic abuses against civilians, including a strangling siege on Al-Fashir for over a year and a half, culminating in massacres within the city’s final hospital.
The sanctions are expected to be officially announced during an upcoming EU Foreign Ministers meeting, alongside moves in the European Parliament to push for the RSF to be designated as a terrorist organization due to the scale of its violations and the growing involvement of regional powers in supporting it.
Diplomatic sources indicate that the EU’s step also aims to curb external interventions in the Sudanese conflict, as both the EU and the US face domestic and international pressure to act against entities allegedly arming and funding the RSF, including certain regional states under increasing scrutiny.
Observers suggest that, if implemented, these sanctions would represent the EU’s strongest action yet regarding the Sudan crisis since its outbreak, potentially marking a turning point in international pressure to push the parties toward a humanitarian and political agreement to halt abuses and pave the way for a genuine peace process.
