Trump Begins Efforts to Resolve Sudan Conflict at Saudi Crown Prince’s Request

Washington – Agencies
During his participation in the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, former President Donald Trump announced that the United States has begun efforts to resolve the Sudan crisis, noting that it was not a personal priority until a direct request from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The announcement, made in front of business leaders and officials from both countries, reflects new coordination between Washington and Riyadh to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan since April 2023, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions.
Speaking at the forum, which saw the signing of investment agreements exceeding $100 billion in defense, energy, and artificial intelligence sectors, Trump stated:
“Resolving the Sudan conflict was not part of my plans, but Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made me pay attention to it. We have already started working on Sudan following his request, and he will play a strong role in ending what is happening there.”
The remarks, reported by Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, followed a phone call between the Crown Prince and Sudanese Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, during which Mohammed bin Salman pledged to pressure Trump regarding Emirati support for the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti).
The forum, held in Washington for the first time in seven years, aimed to strengthen economic partnerships but also extended to regional security issues. Sources cited by Reuters noted that the Crown Prince sees Trump as a key ally to break the deadlock in the Jeddah negotiations, which Saudi Arabia and the US have sponsored since 2023 with little progress.
Potential US pressure could include sanctions on external support to the warring parties, potentially altering the conflict dynamics, with allegations that the Sudanese army receives Iranian support while the UAE backs the RSF via logistics through Libya and Chad.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized at the forum the goal of strengthening regional stability through partnership with America, stating that Saudi efforts via the Jeddah platform will continue to achieve a lasting ceasefire in Sudan.
