Justice Minister: Peace Initiatives Fail to Address the Fate of the Militia and Its Weapons

Justice Minister Abdullah Darf criticized, on Sunday, the peace initiatives proposed for Sudan, arguing that they “do not offer a clear vision regarding the future of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and its weapons,” which he sees as a fundamental prerequisite for achieving sustainable peace in the country.

Speaking at the Doha Forum, Darf stressed that peace “must be sustainable, not a tactical process,” adding that the failure to address the root causes of the conflict and the structural nature of the RSF complicates efforts to end a war now in its third year.

He emphasized that “what is happening in Sudan is not an internal conflict as often portrayed. This is a militia that attempted to seize power by force of arms,” noting that the RSF “has committed crimes and atrocities and continues to receive clear and overt external support.”

Darf added that the international community “has taken no meaningful steps to stop the RSF’s crimes,” asserting that Sudan “is facing a full-fledged aggression involving regional actors,” though he did not name them.

He warned that “silence toward these crimes and the countries supporting this militia has been a major reason behind the persistence of suffering and atrocities,” calling for a firmer international stance against those fueling the conflict.
