Militia Holding 19,000 Prisoners in South Darfur

The Sudanese Doctors Network accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia of detaining more than 19,000 people in Dagreis and Kober prisons and other detention sites in South Darfur State.

In a statement, the network said its information from within Nyala indicates the presence of 4,270 detainees from the police, 544 from the security service, around 4,000 from the armed forces, and 5,000 others from El Fasher. Additionally, more than 5,000 civilians—including professionals, politicians, and journalists—were detained, most of them from Khartoum and Darfur, including 73 medical staff members.

The statement added that detention operations in the prison and other sites in Nyala lack basic humanitarian and legal standards, with detainees being deprived of their fundamental rights.

It revealed that more than four deaths occur weekly due to medical neglect and deteriorating prison conditions, amid outbreaks of diseases caused by overcrowding, poor hygiene, and lack of medical care, with cholera claiming lives due to the absence of health services.

The network called on international organizations to pressure the militia leadership to release detainees, provide healthcare, and halt arbitrary arrests.
