Intensified Diplomatic Activity at the UN Security Council on Sudan

A senior diplomatic source said that intense diplomatic maneuvering is currently underway in the corridors of the UN Security Council, led by the United Kingdom and Denmark, focusing on the latest developments in Sudan and efforts to find a solution to the war that has been raging for more than two and a half years.

The source, speaking to Al-Muhaqqiq news website, said the format of the anticipated session and its agenda will become clearer by the end of this week. However, leaks suggest that an informal interactive dialogue on Sudan is already taking place within the Security Council.

According to the source, the initiative is being driven by the UK, as the “penholder,” together with Denmark. Both countries have prepared a memo assessing existing diplomatic initiatives and proposing mechanisms to prevent duplication and fragmentation of mediation efforts. The memo notes that despite the proliferation of initiatives, none has achieved a genuine breakthrough.

The source expects the upcoming session to include briefings from several key regional and international actors, most notably the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra; the Chair of the African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan, Mohamed Ibn Chambas; the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber; the head of the Sudan and Horn of Africa Department at the Arab League; representatives of IGAD to the United Nations; and a representative of the Quartet.
