United Nations: 1,000 Civilians Killed in Militia Attack on Zamzam Camp

A United Nations report has revealed that more than 1,000 civilians were killed during the takeover of the Zamzam displacement camp in Darfur by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

According to a report issued Thursday by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the killings occurred at Zamzam camp in the Darfur region, with one-third of the victims subjected to extrajudicial executions during the militia’s operation to seize control of the camp between April 11 and 13.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in a statement that “the deliberate killing of civilians or persons hors de combat may constitute a war crime.”

The report documented that at least 104 survivors were subjected to sexual violence, including 75 women, 26 girls, and three boys—most of them from the Zaghawa ethnic group. The violations included rape, gang rape, and sexual slavery, committed either during the attack or along escape routes.

The report also recorded systematic pressure tactics imposed on civilians prior to the assault, including blocking access to food, water, and fuel. It documented the arrest of 26 individuals who were later executed on the road between the camp and the town of Tawila. Survivors recounted how RSF fighters opened fire indiscriminately inside rooms and homes, while one survivor described finding bodies scattered along the roads.
