Arab League Backs Kamil Idris Peace Initiative

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Tuesday called for positive engagement with Sudan’s peace initiative, which includes a comprehensive ceasefire, describing it as a serious, viable framework for resolving the crisis.

In a statement, the League welcomed Prime Minister Kamil Idris’s address to the UN Security Council and his integrated peace initiative, citing its clear recognition of the gravity of Sudan’s crisis and its emphasis on stopping the war, preventing bloodshed, and alleviating humanitarian suffering—while preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Spokesperson Gamal Roshdy said the League values the initiative’s political, humanitarian, and security messages and views it as a credible foundation for a comprehensive solution. The League supports calls for a nationwide ceasefire, civilian protection, unimpeded humanitarian access, addressing displacement and refugee issues, disarmament, and DDR programs to rebuild trust and mend the social fabric.

The League underscored the importance of confidence-building measures grounded in transitional justice, reparations, national reconciliation, and non-exclusion, to prevent renewed violence or fragmentation. It also welcomed the initiative’s emphasis on national ownership of the political process and an inclusive Sudanese–Sudanese dialogue during the transition, culminating in free and fair elections under international observation.
