The first shipment of the Italian air bridge carrying humanitarian aid (food supplies) arrived at Port Sudan Airport on Thursday, destined for Sudan.
Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Salwa Adam Baniya said the convoy targets around 20,000 displaced persons in camps inside and around Sudan, as part of efforts to strengthen relations of cooperation and friendship between the two countries. She described the occasion as a joyful and blessed day, as it coincides with Christmas celebrations, and extended her congratulations to the Sudanese people and Christians everywhere.
She explained that this first convoy weighs approximately 25 tons of assorted food items and marks the beginning of a series of additional convoys that will arrive successively by sea through Port Sudan. These shipments will be directed to targeted areas in accordance with needs assessments and the locations of displaced populations, in full coordination with partners.
Salwa affirmed the Commission’s commitment to facilitating all necessary procedures to ensure that aid reaches its intended beneficiaries. She also reiterated the readiness of the Sudanese government to receive any humanitarian support from Italy or all friendly countries, in a way that helps alleviate the suffering of those affected by the humanitarian situation.
Meanwhile, Italian Ambassador to Sudan Michele Tommaso announced the launch of the first phase of the Italian humanitarian operation with the arrival of this initial shipment, noting that the plan includes additional consignments to be delivered next year by sea.
He explained that the assistance aims to support approximately 20,000 displaced people in camps inside and around Sudan, stressing that the aid reflects the friendship between Italy and Sudan and the strengthening of cooperation and mutual support, including financial investments allocated for humanitarian assistance and cooperation. He reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to continuing its support for the Sudanese people in the coming period.
