A senior government official said on Saturday that the Sudanese army is preparing to repel an attack planned by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies on the towns of Kermak and Qaisan in the Blue Nile region, launching from Ethiopian territory.
Speaking to Sudan Tribune, the official stated: “We confirm the army’s readiness to confront any hostile action in the coming weeks targeting Kermak and Qaisan from Ethiopia.”
The official added that Ethiopia has opened its territory to train RSF fighters and allied forces in four border areas within the Benishangul-Gumuz region, adjacent to the Blue Nile.
The training camps, which include RSF personnel, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North, forces loyal to Ubaid Abu Shotal, and mercenaries from Ethiopia and South Sudan, have reportedly been stocked with military equipment in preparation for an assault on Kermak and Qaisan. The Blue Nile front is reportedly overseen by SPLM-N deputy leader Joseph Tuka.
The official confirmed that Sudanese authorities have tracked the presence of Abu Shotal, Joseph Tuka, and RSF leaders in Assosa, the capital of Benishangul-Gumuz. Additionally, a large shipment of military equipment from the UAE has been observed at two air bases in the region, expected to be used in the planned attacks. Satellite images released on Thursday showed the completion of two new aircraft hangars at Assosa Airport, alongside ongoing construction and ground improvements.
