Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, welcomed Sudan’s peace initiative presented to the UN Security Council.
In a statement on Tuesday, he described the initiative as a comprehensive framework reflecting a profound understanding of the serious crisis in Sudan, as well as a sincere commitment to ending hostilities, halting violence, alleviating humanitarian suffering, and preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Yusuf emphasized the AU’s focus on the political, humanitarian, and security aspects of the initiative, considering it a reliable foundation for achieving sustainable peace. He noted that constructive engagement with the initiative is essential for any comprehensive solution, the cessation of war, restoration of security and stability, and protection of Sudan’s national unity.
He affirmed strong AU support for the initiative’s focus on an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian access, support for refugees and internally displaced persons, disarmament, security sector reform, national reconciliation, and reconstruction. He stressed that these elements are vital for rebuilding trust, repairing social fabric, and consolidating a united Sudanese state.
Yusuf also highlighted the importance of a guaranteed and comprehensive process based on transitional justice, national reconciliation, reparations for victims, and broad political participation, calling it essential for lasting peace and preventing a return to violence or division.
He reiterated the AU’s consistent stance advocating Sudanese-to-Sudanese dialogue during the transitional period to reach national consensus on governance and unity under a single constitutional framework. He also emphasized the importance of free and fair elections under international supervision to meet Sudanese aspirations for democracy and stability.
Yusuf announced the AU’s readiness to closely coordinate with the UN, the Arab League, IGAD, and international partners to support peace efforts in Sudan and reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and regional and international peace and security.
