The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Mohamed Nour prohibited students in its controlled areas from singing the Sudanese national anthem, replacing the flag with the movement’s emblem.
School directors in these areas told Darfur24 that students were instructed not to sing the national anthem during morning assembly and instead recite the movement’s anthem. This directive followed visits by movement officials to schools in displaced persons camps in December, instructing staff to enforce the ban.
The measure sparked significant controversy among students and parents.
