Funding Shortfall Threatens Suspension of UN Aid for Sudan War Victims

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of a worsening acute food insecurity crisis in Sudan, noting that a funding shortfall poses a serious threat and could lead to a halt in supplies by April 2026 unless $695 million is urgently secured.

The WFP said that 21 million people in Sudan are suffering from food insecurity, including 375,000 facing catastrophic hunger.

In response to inquiries from Darfur 24 via email, the WFP’s media team said relief efforts face major challenges, including repeated attacks on aid convoys, restrictions on access to affected areas, and a lack of funding.

The programme confirmed that famine has been recorded in the cities of El-Fasher and Kadugli, expressing deep concern over the continued deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the country.

According to the WFP, the hardest-hit areas are Darfur and Kordofan, where ongoing conflict and widespread internal displacement have exacerbated the crisis.

The WFP explained that it provides food and cash assistance to around four million people each month, including 200,000 newly displaced persons from El-Fasher. In addition, the programme organizes relief convoys carrying thousands of tonnes of food and is working to boost agricultural production in eastern Sudan to help ease the crisis.

The programme warned that any suspension of supplies would disproportionately affect women and children, amid rising malnutrition rates and the spread of disease.
