United Nations: Sudanese People Endure Unimaginable Suffering

International agencies and organizations have warned of the impact of the war on Sudanese civilians after 1,000 days since its outbreak, calling for the opening of safe corridors and increased humanitarian assistance to Sudan.

In a press statement, the United Nations said the people of Sudan are enduring “unimaginable suffering” after 1,000 days of conflict.

The UN reported that the war has displaced 12 million Sudanese, while 21 million people are suffering from hunger.

It added that the World Food Programme continues its life-saving operations in the country, but that there is an urgent need for funding to reach the most vulnerable populations.

In a post on X, the UN World Food Programme noted that the day marks 1,000 days since the start of the war in Sudan, stressing the importance of ensuring safe humanitarian corridors and securing resources in the coming months.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said: “1,000 days of fear, loss, and families being forced to flee is something the world cannot ignore.”

For his part, UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Edouard Beigbeder, said that Sudan’s children have endured 1,000 days of pain.

In a press statement, he noted that since fighting erupted in April 2023, Sudan has become one of the world’s largest and most devastating humanitarian crises, pushing millions of children to the brink of survival. He added that “ending the conflict in Sudan is a moral imperative that cannot wait.”

Save the Children said in a statement posted on X to mark 1,000 days of conflict in Sudan that “12 million people have been displaced, including 5 million children. This humanitarian crisis is often happening away from the spotlight.”

The organization called for an end to indifference toward the war in Sudan, stressing that “Sudan’s children deserve a future.”
