The first session of the Sudan-Azerbaijan Political Consultation Mechanism convened on Monday in Baku, chaired by Sudanese Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Muawiya Osman Khalid and Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Yelchin Rafayev.
The meetings reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen and develop cooperation across various fields, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Sudan’s territorial integrity, independence, sovereignty, and national institutions, while firmly rejecting any interference in its internal affairs.
The Azerbaijani side expressed appreciation for the steps taken by the Sudanese government to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery, open border crossings, and enhance cooperation with the UN, its agencies, and international partners.
Sudan expressed its appreciation for progress toward peace in the South Caucasus and for the signing of the historic preliminary peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in early August 2025 under U.S. President Donald Trump’s auspices, describing the accord as the beginning of a new chapter of regional cooperation and integration.
Sudan also reiterated full support for Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to rebuild the Karabakh region and create conditions for the return of Azerbaijani citizens to their homes.
Both sides stressed the importance of activating and updating existing agreements and protocols, translating them into clear and actionable programs, while agreeing to hold joint ministerial committee meetings, with relevant authorities on both sides determining suitable dates.
