Egyptian Foreign Minister: We Reject Any Attempts to Undermine the Sudanese Army

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Egypt faces an unprecedented series of regional and international challenges in 2026, but is addressing them with wisdom and calm, relying on strong state institutions and the principles of international law.

Speaking at Al-Ahram’s annual conference, Abdelatty said:
“The situation is extremely fragile in several regions, and there is no alternative to continuous and resolute action, while recognizing the importance of international engagement—particularly by the United States—to achieve stability.”

He noted that Egypt is working vigorously to implement the second phase of initiatives related to regional issues, adding that “all international decisions related to peace are temporary in nature and must be handled with caution and responsibility.”

Regarding Ethiopia and the Nile Basin, the minister stressed Egypt’s rejection of unilateral and illegal measures, emphasizing that international law remains the primary reference for water resources. He said Egypt succeeded over the past year in enhancing cooperation with Nile Basin countries and launching mechanisms to support joint development, including dams and vital infrastructure projects, in a way that serves African peoples and Egyptians alike.

On Sudan, Abdelatty said Egypt has drawn clear red lines to preserve Sudan’s unity and institutions, rejecting any attempts at division or to undermine the national army and state institutions. He added that Cairo is working with the international quartet and the United Nations to halt killings and destruction and to protect the Sudanese people.
