The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said he is deeply concerned that the horrific crimes committed during and after the takeover of El Fasher could be repeated in Kordofan.
Türk stated: “I have heard accounts of widespread summary executions carried out by the Rapid Support Forces militia during its attack on El Fasher,” adding that “sexual violence is being used as a weapon in Sudan, and we have indications that it is widespread.”
Speaking at a press conference at the conclusion of his visit to Sudan, Türk stressed that attacks on vital civilian infrastructure constitute serious violations that may amount to war crimes.
The UN official noted that indiscriminate attacks on the Merowe Dam caused power outages affecting hospitals and farms.
He called on all parties to uphold their obligations to protect civilians and infrastructure, and to ensure safe corridors for civilians to leave conflict zones in Sudan.
