Sovereign Council Official: What Happened on April 15 Was a Foreign-Backed Coup

Member of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General (Naval Engineer) and Advisor Ibrahim Jaber, said that the events of April 15 constituted a premeditated coup backed by well-known external actors.

Speaking during a briefing for heads of diplomatic missions and international organizations operating in Sudan, held in Port Sudan on Tuesday, Jaber said the war was not a conflict between two generals, as is often portrayed. He emphasized that, in reality, the Sudanese Armed Forces have a single leadership represented by the Commander-in-Chief and Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.

Jaber stated that the events amounted to a full-fledged military coup, supported by what he described as conclusive evidence, noting that a military unit had been prepared and equipped before launching coordinated attacks on military command headquarters across several states.

He added that the objective of the coup was to engineer demographic change in Sudan with regional backing, stressing that the facts surrounding the matter are clear and evident.

According to Jaber, the armed forces managed to thwart the coup attempt within hours and succeeded in securing a number of their headquarters.

He further said the situation was accompanied by multiple externally orchestrated wars, including a media campaign aimed at absolving RSF militia leaders through misinformation, as well as an economic war marked by the looting of banks, vehicles, and civilian property. He also cited systematic sabotage, including the destruction of bridges, theft of cables, and the devastation of infrastructure, in addition to the starvation of civilians through the siege of cities.

Jaber asserted that the rebel militia committed serious crimes and violations of international law against the Sudanese people, adding that civilians suffered greatly and that the scale of violations committed was unprecedented in human history.
