British Home Secretary described the UN report on atrocities in El Fasher as “deeply horrifying,” noting that it documented systematic starvation, torture, killings, rape, and widespread ethnic targeting during the RSF’s siege of the city.
In a statement Thursday, Cooper said the United Kingdom had called in November for the preparation of the report to ensure accountability for those responsible and would brief the on its findings to ensure that Sudanese women’s voices are heard.
She added that the report describes “unspeakable horrors,” including forcing people to choose between starvation and eating animal feed, subjecting children to gang rape, and ambushing and slaughtering civilians as they attempted to flee the besieged city.
Cooper called for urgent international criminal investigations into the atrocities in El Fasher, an end to the flow of weapons, and the expansion and enforcement of the arms embargo.
She said the United Kingdom had imposed sanctions on four senior RSF leaders accused of committing grave atrocities in El Fasher and would work to have them sanctioned at the United Nations as well.
Cooper concluded that the world continues to fail the Sudanese people, violence persists, and urgent action is required to ensure justice, accountability, and peace.
