Washington and London Stress Need for Humanitarian Truce in Sudan

The U.S. State Department’s Deputy Spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to discuss a range of shared concerns, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and developments in Syria and Gaza. Both sides, he said, underscored their “shared focus on securing a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan.”

The meeting followed a series of bilateral and multilateral engagements centered on Sudan, aimed at building momentum ahead of a United Nations Security Council session chaired by the United Kingdom. The session emphasized the urgency of ending the war and achieving a humanitarian truce to facilitate aid delivery.

The U.S. Departments of State and Treasury also issued a joint statement following sanctions imposed on three RSF leaders, reiterating the need to end the war in Sudan. The statement stressed that a humanitarian ceasefire should precede efforts to ensure the delivery of food assistance to affected civilians.
