Decline in Air Traffic at Nyala Airport

Local sources and residents reported on Monday a decline in air traffic at Nyala International Airport in South Darfur State during March and April.

Residents told Darfur24 that cargo flights have dropped significantly, averaging no more than one to two flights every 14 days in March, and only three flights so far in April.

They added that last week saw just one flight per day.

Sources noted that small passenger aircraft have not stopped operating, but are now landing at the runway of the former UNAMID mission in northern Nyala, with fewer flights compared to three months ago.

Meanwhile, three separate sources from Zalingei told Darfur24 that unidentified cargo planes were seen flying east of the city during April without a known destination.

They added that the aircraft switched off their warning and night lights while in flight.

Eyewitnesses said the sound of the planes resembled heavy Ilyushin aircraft, with their last recorded flights occurring on April 17, 18, and 19.
