Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that more than 500,000 people have been affected by the clashes cthat took place between the army and the militias Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in parts of Gezira State, according to the Displacement Tracking Matrix of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
According to the report issued by the office yesterday, Wednesday, about 275,800 people have been displaced from the Greater Medani and East Gezira localities in Gezira State, while about 234,000 people from Khartoum State took refuge in Gezira State and witnessed a second displacement after the outbreak of violence in December, 15th , 2023.
In addition, IOM field teams discovered that 152,400 displaced people living in 380 sites in the localities of East Gezira, Greater Medani, Al-Hassahissa, South Gezira, Al-Kamlin, and Umm Al-Qura left those sites. These sites include 133 schools, 24 shelter centres, 35 villages and 50 neighbourhoods.
Roads leading to villages east of Gezira , including Sharq Al-Nil in Khartoum State, were jeopardized, as traders used alternative routes to bring supplies. This has led to shortages in basic food commodities and prices have tripled. Livestock owners are reportedly facing a major shortage of animal fodder with thousands of livestock at risk of death. There are reports of civilian displacement in Al-Manaqil, where displaced people have taken refuge in schools, while fuel prices have reportedly quadrupled, affecting the movement of people and supplies.
Field teams tracing the displacement reported that 60 percent of the total affected people – representing 304,340 IDPs – fled to other states in Sudan. The presence of IDPs from Gezira State was observed in the states of Gadarif (64,551 IDPs), Sinnar (60,000 IDPs), Red Sea (50,035 displaced persons), White Nile (40,750 IDPs), River Nile (30,000 IDPs), Kasala (30,000 IDPs), and Blue Nile. (15,000 IDPs), and the Northern State (14,000 IDPs).
