Start of Summer Work on Gezira Scheme Next Week

Next week, the Governor of Gezira, Taher Ibrahim Al-Khair, will inaugurate the launch of the summer works program and its contribution to clearing “Major Maatouk” in Gezira Scheme, which feeds the Al-Tahamid section and part of the Al-Matouri section from mud and weeds.
Maatouk section is witnessing the start of groundnut crop cultivation on the twentieth of May, in light of the availability of irrigation water through the two main canals of Gezira and Al-Manaqil. Work continues successively in the irrigation ditches to ensure the flow of irrigation water through the canals and sub-canals.
The joint meeting between the Gezira Scheme Administration and the Irrigation Department was held (Wednesday) in the 24th Al-Qurashi area, which included the Director of the Agricultural Department of the Gezira Scheme, Abdul Qader Ahmed Mohammad, and his deputy for transportation, Engineer Yasser Abdul-Jalil, Engineer Ali Ahmed Ibrahim, Secretary General of the Board of Directors, and Captain Ali Ahmed Al-Nil, Director of the Economic Security Unit of the Gezira Scheme. On the irrigation side, the director of the East Al-Manaqil Irrigation Sector, Engineer Adam Ibrahim, is the director of the West Al-Manaqil Irrigation Sector, Engineer Attaya Adam Al-Nour.
The meeting stressed the need to tighten coordination between the Scheme management, irrigation and relevant authorities in light of the challenges facing the country, along with the need to activate popular efforts to address irrigation issues to ensure the success of the agricultural season.
The meeting discussed chronic irrigation problems and the necessity of working to address them. The meeting also reassured the precise inventory of summer work and the budgets required to complete maintenance and disinfection of canals. A plan was drawn up for the immediate start of the inauguration of clearing the drains.
It is noteworthy that the Governor of the Gezira Scheme announced a major initiative during the next few days to address irrigation issues, in which the owners of private sector machinery will participate in the field of drilling and land preparations, and production partners, with the aim of making the agricultural season a success in light of the circumstances that the country is going through.
