CSOs Appeal to the World Community for Sudan

Sudan Events – Report

The undersigned civil society organizations expressed grave concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, and called on the World community to take the necessary measures to protect millions of civilians at risk and avoid an imminent humanitarian catastrophe.
Current situation :

Internal armed conflict covers approximately 80% of Sudan’s territory, where fighting between the Sudanese army SAF and the Rapid Support Forces RSF continues unabated, and incidents of violence or threats of violence are reported in previously safe states. Since 15 April 2023, millions of civilians have been displaced, including at least 10 million people forced to flee their homes and seek other refuges within the country, making Sudan the worst internal displacement situation in the world.
At the same time, more than 2 million civilians have been forced to cross Sudan’s international borders and seek refuge in neighboring countries, often without vital support or facing severe security risks.
Warnings and Concerns :

In their statement dated 31 May 2024, titled “No Time to Delay as Famine Chases Millions in Sudan Amidst Heavy Fighting and Denied Access,” officials from the UN’s Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) warned that “time is running out for millions of people in Sudan who are at imminent risk of famine, displaced from their lands, living under bombardment, and cut off from humanitarian assistance.” At least 18 million people are widely believed to be facing acute hunger in Sudan, including 4 million children who are acutely malnourished.
Our evidence suggests that the deadly famine is already affecting millions of people, particularly in isolated areas of the greater Darfur region and Kordofan, as well as in Gezira and Khartoum states.

Call for Action :

The UN’s IASC has been at the forefront of humanitarian action, protecting vulnerable internally displaced people, including women and children, inside Sudan and supporting Sudanese refugees across borders. Despite their exemplary efforts and dedication under harsh conditions, they face multiple challenges, including significantly reduced funding levels. In this regard, we salute the heroic efforts of humanitarian workers and call for them to do more given the growing need for their valuable work and life-saving services.

Call to the World Community :

We are deeply concerned about the limited support for humanitarian action in Sudan by the World community, which is significantly impacting the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
It is disappointing that more than two months after the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and its Neighbors held in Paris on 15 April 2024, UN relief agencies have received less than 20% of the urgently needed $2.7 billion.

We call on the World community and donor countries to urgently fulfill the financial commitments they made in Paris on 15 April 2024.
We also encourage the donor community to consider providing additional funding for humanitarian action. The Sudanese people, victims of many years of tyranny and atrocities inside and outside Sudan, deserve the generous support of all peace lovers.
