Floods Claim the Lives of 9 People in Merowe

Nine people died due to the floods and heavy rains that struck parts of Merowe locality on Monday morning.

The floods and heavy rains, accompanied by winds and thunderstorms, created catastrophic conditions in Merowe. The area of “Tanaqasi Rowais,” 15 kilometers south of Merowe, was the most affected, with the floods resulting in the death of nine people, including children.

A large number of homes were completely or partially destroyed, leaving many families without shelter.

Merowe locality reported that the floodwaters submerged vast areas of agricultural land. The city of Merowe experienced torrential flooding in the “Abu Dom” creek for the second time in a week, which led to the disruption of the national road near the city’s entrance, partial collapse of the bridge connecting Merowe and Abu Dom on the internal road, and the collapse of several houses, and the submersion of crops.

The floodwaters also swept through the areas of Wadi Al-Kareer in the Qurayr district, “Atbara Street Intersection,” Tanaqasi Market, and Deem, Fetnah, Al-Dabeiba, and Abu Dom, causing significant damage, including the destruction and cracking of many homes and farms.

The residents of Greater Tanaqasi and Merowe appealed to the state for immediate intervention due to the catastrophic situation and called for the sheltering of the affected and urgent humanitarian aid, as well as increased security in vulnerable areas in the face of the complex circumstances facing the victims.
