Between 1967 and 2020, lightning strikes killed 101,309 people in India, with a significant acceleration between 2010 and 2020. The report indicates a steady increase in lightning activity in India, making it one of the leading causes of death in climate-related natural disasters. The report highlights that forecasting lightning activity in India has become increasingly difficult. The large number of victims in India is also attributed to ineffective warning systems and a lack of knowledge about risk reduction.
