Sudan Joins the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The Charge d’Affaires at the Sudanese Embassy in Brazil, Dr. Ahmed Tijani Sawar, signed a statement joining Sudan to the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, on behalf of the Government of Sudan and the relevant ministry, representing the Minister of Social Development, Ahmed Adam Bekhit.
The alliance aims to create policies that reduce hunger and poverty and promote the exchange of experiences, uniting the world in a broad approach where international, regional, and national levels cooperate to alleviate poverty and hunger and stimulate social protection to ensure access to goods and services that help the poor and vulnerable populations, as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 10.
Brazil launched this initiative at the previous session of the United Nations General Assembly, and it will be officially launched at the G20 summit scheduled for November 18, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro.
Sudan’s membership as a founding member of the alliance will enhance its opportunities to benefit from the alliance’s programs, technical assistance, the exchange of experiences, and funding from the institutions involved in the alliance, including the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the BRICS New Development Bank.
It is worth noting that Sudan had previously cooperated with Brazil in tackling poverty, a successful initiative that helped lift more than 5 million households out of poverty through programs for productive families, small projects, and direct support.
Brazil will chair the General Secretariat of the alliance, in cooperation with the FAO, until 2030 according to the strategy to be approved by the alliance, after which the presidency will pass to South Africa, which will assume the presidency of the G20, succeeding Brazil.
