Launch of Direct Cash Assistance in Khartoum

Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The Minister of Social Development, Dr. Ahmed Adam Bakhit, stated that the Sudanese people are currently fighting the ongoing war with a single aim: to defend their existence and identity. He emphasized that the future Sudan will be different from the pre-war era.
On Saturday, Dr. Bakhit began a visit to Khartoum State, starting with a meeting with the state governor, Ahmed Othman Hamza, attended by members of the state government. The meeting included discussions on issues related to citizen stability and providing necessary support.
At the Omdurman locality headquarters, the minister and the governor inaugurated the distribution of the fifth and sixth phases of direct cash assistance for targeted families, with wide participation from members of the Khartoum state government.
Dr. Bakhit emphasized that Khartoum, as the capital of the country, should be prioritized in receiving aid. He revealed that the direct cash assistance program currently targets 70,000 families, with plans to expand coverage to 600,000 families next year. The program will also include integrated support such as health insurance services, access to production tools, and pension disbursements.
He further announced the initiation of strong partnerships involving federal ministries, Zakat institutions, UN agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector to combat poverty. The program began in Gedaref State and will extend to other states.
Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza noted that Khartoum State requires additional support due to the large influx of people fleeing security disturbances in other states. He added that as the army advances and more safe areas are secured, the state faces significant challenges in providing services, shelter, and food.
